Symphony No. 6 is the sixth symphony by Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, composed and premiered in 1939. Musically it juxtaposes an intense, lyrical opening with shorter, lighter subsequent movements, employing late-Romantic orchestration, stark harmonies and moments of sardonic wit, and it occupies a distinctive position in Shostakovich's career as a work written during the fraught political climate of the late 1930s.
