Winterreise is a song cycle by Austrian composer Franz Schubert, composed in 1827. The cycle, written for voice and piano, comprises a sequence of songs exploring themes of winter, solitude and unrequited love, characterised by spare piano textures, adventurous harmonic turns and expressive vocal writing, and as a late work it consolidates Schubert's contributions to the art-song tradition and played a formative role in the subsequent lieder repertory.
