Symphony No. 5
Album by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky & Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Sir Georg Solti
Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed and first performed in 1888. A late-Romantic orchestral work, it is characterised by a recurring motto theme and a cyclical structure, with lush harmonies, varied orchestration and contrasts between sombre passages and more assertive brass-led episodes, and it forms part of Tchaikovsky's mature symphonic output and the 19th-century symphonic repertoire.
