The Turn of the Screw is a chamber opera by English composer Benjamin Britten, first performed in 1954. Scored for a small instrumental ensemble and a cast of singers, it features spare, often eerie orchestration, contrapuntal textures and recurring motifs to convey psychological tension, and it occupies a central place in Britten's mid‑career output as an exploration of chamber-scale dramatic writing.
