The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet score by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, premiered in 1892. The score showcases late-Romantic orchestral writing with colourful instrumentation, distinctive melodies and a succession of varied dance forms, and it occupies an important place in Tchaikovsky's output as an example of his work for the theatre.
