Symphony no. 6 / Symphonisches Praeludium

Album by Gustav Mahler & Royal Scottish National Orchestra & Neeme Järvi

Symphony No. 6 is the sixth symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, composed in 1903–1904 and first performed in 1906. The work is a large-scale late-Romantic symphony characterised by expansive orchestration, stark contrasts of mood and recurring hammer-like motifs that contribute to its brooding, tragic cast, and it marks a crucial moment in Mahler's middle-period shift towards darker, more intense symphonic writing.
First released: 1993
