Symphony no. 1 in C minor, op. 68

Album by Johannes Brahms & Columbia Symphony Orchestra & Bruno Walter

Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 is the first symphony by German composer Johannes Brahms, completed and first performed in 1876. The work combines late-Romantic orchestral writing with classical forms, notable for its dense textures, rigorous thematic development and the large-scale progression from a stormy C minor opening to a C major finale, and it represents Brahms's belated entry into the symphonic tradition after years of hesitation.
First released: 1988
