Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5
Album by Jean Sibelius & Konzerthausorchester Berlin & Kurt Sanderling
Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 are the fourth and fifth symphonies by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, composed in 1911 and 1915 respectively. Musically they illustrate Sibelius's movement from late-Romanticism towards a more concentrated modernist language: the Fourth is characterised by austere, dissonant textures and compact forms, while the Fifth features broader orchestral gestures and expansive, arching structures that mark a development in his symphonic writing.
