Songs and Dances of Death
Album by Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky & Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky & Sergey Prokof'ev & Galina Vishnevskaya & Mstislav Rostropovich
Songs and Dances of Death is a song cycle by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, composed between 1875 and 1877. Originally written for voice and piano and frequently heard in orchestrated arrangements, the cycle employs stark harmonies, declamatory vocal lines and vivid piano textures to portray macabre scenes and psychological drama, and it represents Mussorgsky's mature exploration of musical realism in late 19th-century Russian art song.
