Symphony No. 45 "Farewell" / Symphony No.48 "Maria Theresa"

Two orchestral symphonies by Joseph Haydn, composed in 1772 and 1769 respectively, representing works from his middle period of composition. They exemplify Classical-era orchestration and form—with transparent textures, balanced phrasing and inventive wind and string colours—and one of the works makes deliberate use of theatrical staging as a musical device, reflecting Haydn's experimental approach to symphonic writing at that stage of his career.
