The 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87, is a cycle of piano pieces by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1950–51. Drawing on Baroque models, the set pairs preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys to explore a wide range of moods and pianistic textures, combining contrapuntal craft with mid-20th-century harmonic and tonal experimentation and occupying a notable place in Shostakovich's mid-career output.
