Boris Godunov is an opera by Modest Mussorgsky, first completed in 1869 and premiered in 1874. The score exemplifies Russian nationalist opera through its dramatic choral writing, declamatory vocal lines, modal and chromatic harmonies and orchestration that emphasises folk-derived melodies and speech-like rhythms, reflecting Mussorgsky's mature operatic style and its place in his compositional career.
