Preludes and Fugues is a collection of keyboard works by Johann Sebastian Bach, first compiled as The Well-Tempered Clavier with Book I dated 1722 and Book II dated 1742. The pieces systematically explore all major and minor keys, exemplify Bach's contrapuntal technique and the musical possibilities of well temperament, and occupy a central place in the development of keyboard repertoire and compositional pedagogy.
