Symphony no. 5
Album by Gustav Mahler & Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar & Gustavo Dudamel
Symphony No. 5 is the fifth symphony by the Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1902 and first performed in 1904. A large-scale late-Romantic orchestral work, it is characterised by bold brass and string writing, stark contrasts between sombre and lyrical passages, complex harmonic and contrapuntal textures, and marks Mahler's return to purely instrumental symphonic writing that helped shape early 20th-century symphonic practice.
