The Planets

Album by Gustav Holst & London Festival Orchestra & Ross Pople

The Planets is a seven-movement orchestral suite by English composer Gustav Holst, composed between 1914 and 1916 and first performed in 1918. The music employs large orchestral forces, striking rhythmic patterns, varied harmonic colours and imaginative orchestration to portray contrasting planetary characters, drawing on late-Romantic and early-modern idioms and marking a pivotal point in Holst's career and in early 20th-century orchestral repertoire.
First released: 1991
