Symphonies nos. 2 & 11

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre & Valery Gergiev

Symphonies Nos. 2 and 11 are orchestral works by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1927 and 1957 respectively. Symphony No. 2 is brief and experimentally inclined, incorporating choral and avant-garde textures reflective of the early Soviet period, while Symphony No. 11 is a longer, programmatic, sombre work that uses expansive orchestration to evoke historical and revolutionary scenes and represents a mature phase in Shostakovich's symphonic output.
