Curlew River
Album by Benjamin Britten & Sir Neville Marriner
Curlew River is a one-act church parable by English composer Benjamin Britten, first performed in 1964. Drawing on elements of Japanese Noh theatre and English liturgical chant, the work uses modal melodies, sparse chamber orchestration and ritualistic vocal writing to create a theatrical, contemplative sound-world and marks Britten's exploration of sacred themes and stagecraft in his mid-career output.
