Symphony no. 8

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra & Leonard Slatkin

Symphony No. 8 is the eighth symphony by Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich, composed and premiered in 1943. The four-movement work is sombre and densely orchestrated, with stark contrasts, complex counterpoint and expansive orchestral textures that reflect wartime turmoil, and it occupies a central place in Shostakovich's wartime symphonic output as an intense, introspective counterpart to his other works of the period.
