Symphonies nos. 5 & 9

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & Valery Gergiev & Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre

Symphonies Nos. 5 & 9 are orchestral works by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed in 1937 and 1945. The Fifth combines brooding, dramatic orchestration with moments of restraint and irony and functions as a turning point in his response to political pressures in the late 1930s; the Ninth contrasts this with a more concise, classical-influenced palette and economy of forces that reflected a change in tone at the end of the Second World War.
