Dido and Aeneas is an opera by the English composer Henry Purcell, composed and first performed around 1688–1689. It exemplifies English Baroque opera with expressive vocal writing, choral passages and continuo-based instrumental textures that blend recitative and aria forms, and it occupies an important place in Purcell's stage output and the development of English opera.
