Sonatas for Cello & Piano, op. 38 & 99

Album by Johannes Brahms & Luigi Piovano & Luisa Payer

Sonatas for Cello & Piano, Op. 38 and Op. 99 are cello sonatas by Johannes Brahms, composed in 1865 and 1886 respectively. They exemplify Brahms's Romantic-era chamber music, featuring rich, lyrical cello lines set against substantial pianistic textures and contrapuntal writing, and they occupy positions in his chamber-music output as an earlier mature work (Op. 38) and a later, more concise statement (Op. 99).
