Symphony No. 1 is the first symphony by Austrian composer Gustav Mahler, completed in 1888 and first performed in 1889. The work fuses late-Romantic orchestral writing with folk-like motifs, vivid orchestral colours and large-scale formal arcs, marking Mahler's emergence as a symphonic composer who expanded the scale and expressive range of the genre.
