Symphony No. 8 'Unfinished' and Symphony No. 9 'The Great' are symphonic compositions by Franz Schubert, composed in 1822 and between 1825 and 1828 respectively. Both works exemplify Schubert's transition to mature orchestral writing, combining lyrical melody, expansive harmonic progressions and rich orchestral colours, and they occupy a central position in his late output and in the early Romantic symphonic tradition.
