Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk is an opera by Dmitri Shostakovich, premiered in 1934. The score combines late-Romantic orchestration, stark dissonance and expressive vocal writing with elements of expressionism, and it occupies an important place in Shostakovich's early career for establishing his prominence in Soviet musical life and for its subsequent role in debates about art and politics in 20th-century music.
