Vespers Op. 37
Album by Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff & MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig & Howard Arman
Vespers, Op. 37 is a choral composition by Сергей Васильевич Рахманинов, completed in 1915. Set to Russian Orthodox liturgical texts for unaccompanied choir, it synthesises traditional chant modalities with late-Romantic harmonies, emphasises deep bass sonorities and rich choral textures through a mixture of homophonic and polyphonic writing, and marks Rachmaninoff's return to sacred Russian music within his early 20th-century choral output.
