The String Sextets / Die Streichsextette / Les sextuors à corde

Album by Johannes Brahms & Nash Ensemble

The String Sextets (Die Streichsextette / Les sextuors à corde) are a pair of string sextets by Johannes Brahms, composed in 1860 and 1864. They are Romantic-era chamber works scored for two violins, two violas and two cellos that combine lyrical themes with dense harmonic textures and contrapuntal interplay, and they represent Brahms's early exploration of large-scale chamber form within his developing instrumental oeuvre.
