It presents interpretations of Thelonious Monk compositions in a post-bop style that combines blues-inflected phrasing, angular harmonies and an open rhythmic approach, and it arrived as Blythe shifted from earlier hard bop roots toward more exploratory sounds in his 1980s recordings.
