Missa Solemnis is a solemn mass in D major by Ludwig van Beethoven, completed in 1823. The work is a large-scale choral and orchestral setting of the Mass that employs dense counterpoint, extended vocal writing and symphonic treatment of liturgical material, and it exemplifies Beethoven's late-period style and his effort to integrate sacred forms with the scope of his mature orchestral language.
