Fantasias for the Viols, 1680
Album by Henry Purcell & Hespèrion XXI & Jordi Savall
Fantasias for the Viols, 1680 is a collection of consort fantasias by the English composer Henry Purcell, published in 1680. The pieces employ intricate imitative counterpoint, expressive chromaticism and dense polyphonic textures characteristic of late 17th-century English chamber music, and they occupy a clear place in Purcell's output as representative works of the viol consort repertoire within the early Baroque tradition.
