Symphony no. 11 "The Year 1905"

Album by Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich & BBC Philharmonic & John Storgårds

Symphony No. 11 "The Year 1905" is the eleventh symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich, composed and premiered in 1957. The four-movement orchestral work adopts a programme approach to depict episodes of the 1905 Russian Revolution, employing vivid orchestration, march-like and lyrical material and chorale textures, and it reflects Shostakovich's continued engagement with public, politically inflected symphonic writing in the 1950s.
