Progressive Metal

Progressive Metal emerged in the late 1980s, primarily from the fusion of heavy metal with the cerebral complexities of progressive rock, attracting fans who enjoy long songs and concept albums but simultaneously despise, quite passionately, the word 'mainstream'. Characterised by elaborate structures, virtuosic instrumental performances, and lyrical themes that often make one wonder if a PhD was a prerequisite for enjoyment, it sounds like an orchestra having a particularly intense debate with a band of technically minded rockers. Interestingly, it’s one of the few genres where musicians can dazzle you with a twelve-minute guitar solo whilst singing about the existential dread of intergalactic travel – a real crowd pleaser at parties.
