Mumble Rap emerged in the 2010s, primarily in the United States, when artists decided that clear enunciation was overrated and that a thick layer of vocal effects could substitute for actual lyrics. Characterised by its slurred delivery and catchy beats, it often sounds like a melodic haze that may or may not have something to say if you can be bothered to decipher it. The genre has made such an impact that one might argue it’s proof you can be famous without being understood—what a time to be alive.
