Memphis Soul
Memphis Soul emerged in the late 1950s in, funnily enough, Memphis, Tennessee, blending gospel fervour with rhythm and blues pizzazz like a musical fruit salad that’s actually rather good for you. Characterised by emotional vocals, funky rhythms, and horns that sound like they’ve had one too many cups of coffee, it’s all very uplifting yet simultaneously makes you want to cry quite dramatically. The music not only filled dancefloors but also served as a soundtrack to the civil rights movement, proving that while you can’t always take life too seriously, you might as well do it to a brilliant beat.
