Indie Rap
Indie rap emerged in the early 2000s as a cheeky alternative to mainstream hip hop, where independent artists decided that DIY ethos and a lack of commercialism were much cooler than bling and auto-tune. It's characterised by clever wordplay, offbeat production, and an endearing tendency to take the mickey out of both the genre and themselves, resulting in tracks that could make you nod along or chuckle at the same time. With its roots in underground scenes, indie rap has undoubtedly spawned a legion of hat-wearing, latte-sipping fans who appreciate lyrics with a side of irony.
