Improvised music began to take shape in the mid-20th century, mainly in avant-garde circles and often leaving traditional structure behind like a rebellious teenager. It sounds like a group of musicians have forgotten the rules and decided to have a free-for-all jam session, where each player takes turns being the loudest without a care for melody, rhythm, or the concept of a 'song.
