Freestyle

Freestyle music burst onto the scene in the 1980s, primarily in New York, when disco's appeal evolved into catchy, synth-laden anthems, often featuring breathy vocals about love and heartache—because what else would you sing about in a club? Characterised by electronic beats and the kind of melodies that could make even a fridge hum along, it’s the musical equivalent of a fizzy drink—sweet, bubbly, and surprisingly addictive. Despite being a bit of a forgotten gem nowadays, it remains the soundtrack to many a questionable dance-off in dimly lit rooms across the globe.
