Avant Rock

Avant-Rock kicked off in the 1960s, primarily as a curious offshoot of rock that decided following conventional melodies was far too mainstream for its taste. It's characterised by experimental sounds, odd time signatures, and sometimes bewildering lyrics that seem to have come from an especially vivid dream, making it either an enriching experience or an invitation to an existential crisis, depending on your viewpoint. The genre often revels in obscurity, producing tracks that feel like a musical game of 'guess what on earth that was,' which can be great fun if you also enjoy avant-garde theatre and questionable fashion choices.
