Atmospheric
Atmospheric music began fermenting in the late 1970s and 1980s, particularly within the ambient and electronic scenes, where artists realised that soundscapes could evoke moods better than a sullen teenager with a guitar. It typically features long, flowing melodies, layered textures, and plenty of reverb, resulting in a sonic experience you could float off on if you weren't careful. Often used as background for yoga sessions or artsy films, it has a knack for making even the most mundane situations feel like a transcendent journey, or at the very least, slightly more interesting than staring at paint drying.
