A Cappella

A cappella, which quite literally means 'in the manner of the chapel', started off in the Renaissance period when choirs decided to unleash their vocal talents without instruments, perhaps out of sheer rebelliousness or a lack of funds. Characterised by harmonious vocals that can imitate instruments, it often sounds like a group of enthusiastic mates jamming together whilst trying not to trip over their own vocal cords. Today, it has become a cultural phenomena, proving that you can have a chart-topping career using just your voice, a bit of creativity, and possibly some impressive throat techniques.
