The Roots

The Roots are an American hip hop band formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1987, whose music blends hip hop with soul, jazz and funk influences. They are characterised by live instrumentation and improvisation, evolving from underground hip hop into a group that brought a live‑band dynamic to rap, expanded into television performance and helped integrate jazz, soul and rock elements into contemporary hip hop.
