Anthony Payne was an English composer and musicologist born in London in 1936 who began his career in the 1950s composing, arranging and writing about contemporary classical music. His work combines post-tonal compositional techniques with expressive orchestration, and he is particularly noted for preparing a completion of Edward Elgar's unfinished Third Symphony and for his analytical writings on 20th-century British music.
