Louis Gruenberg was an American composer and pianist born in Rostov-on-Don in 1884 who emigrated to the United States as a child and established his career in the early twentieth century, working in classical composition, opera and film music. His output blended late-Romantic orchestral sonorities with modernist techniques and American themes, encompassing operas, orchestral and chamber works as well as film scores that engaged with contemporary theatre and cinema.
