Fred Lerdahl

Fred Lerdahl is an American composer and music theorist born in Milwaukee in 1943 who began his professional career in the late 1960s and is associated with contemporary classical and modernist composition. His work combines rigorous formal structures and rhythmic complexity with research in music cognition, and his theoretical writings on tonal organisation and generative analysis have informed his compositional practice within the American contemporary classical milieu.
