Michael Stipe is an American singer, songwriter and visual artist, best known as the lead vocalist and lyricist of R.E.M., an alternative rock band he co-founded in Athens, Georgia, in 1980. He has also worked in film production and photography, and his writing often explores themes of identity, politics and environmental and social issues.
