Andy Razaf was an American poet and lyricist born in Washington, D.C. in 1895 who began his career in Tin Pan Alley and in the jazz and popular-music scenes of the 1920s. His lyrics, rooted in urban vernacular and jazz rhythms, helped shape many popular and jazz songs of the 1920s–30s and reflected the cultural currents of the Harlem Renaissance.
