Dmitry Bortniansky was a Ukrainian-born composer who built his career in the Russian Empire from the late 18th century, chiefly known for his contributions to Orthodox sacred choral music alongside secular vocal works. Having studied in Italy and drawing on Ukrainian folk elements as well as Western European choral techniques, he produced a substantial body of polyphonic liturgical settings and choral concert pieces that influenced church music practice across Eastern Europe.
