Django Bates is an English composer, bandleader and multi-instrumentalist who emerged from the British jazz scene in the 1980s, originally gaining prominence through work with large ensembles such as Loose Tubes before leading his own groups. His music blends jazz with elements of avant-garde, contemporary classical and theatrical humour, characterised by intricate arrangements, unexpected harmonies and a practice of composing for both small ensembles and larger orchestral and chamber settings.
