Sir Laurence Olivier was an English actor and director born in Dorking, Surrey, who began his professional stage career in the 1920s and worked extensively in theatre, film and radio. Specialising in classical repertoire, particularly Shakespeare and other dramatic roles, he moved between stage and screen throughout his career and played a part in shaping mid-20th-century British theatre production and film adaptation practices.
