Philipp Scharwenka

Philipp Scharwenka was a German composer born in Samter, Province of Posen (then part of Prussia) in 1847 who established his career in the late-Romantic classical tradition and worked mainly as a composer and teacher in Berlin. He wrote piano pieces, chamber works, songs and orchestral music marked by late-Romantic harmonies and lyrical melodies, and was active in Berlin's musical life as an educator and advocate for contemporary repertoire.
