Otto Nicolai

Otto Nicolai was a German composer and conductor born in Königsberg in 1810 who began his career as a violinist and composer in the 1830s, working principally in opera and orchestral music of the early Romantic period. He is associated with the comic opera Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor and with efforts to establish professional orchestral institutions in Vienna and Berlin, and his music blends lyrical melody, Classical forms and Romantic orchestration that influenced mid‑19th century German opera and choral practice.
